Chicago winters are brutal on vehicles. From battery drain to frozen fuel lines, here is what every Chicago driver should check before the first freeze hits.
Chicago winters are no joke. Temperatures regularly dip below zero, roads get buried in salt, and vehicles that are not properly prepared suffer the consequences — dead batteries, cracked hoses, flat tires, and frozen locks are all common. Here is a checklist every Chicago driver should run through before December hits.
1. Battery Test
Cold weather is the number one killer of marginal batteries. A battery that starts fine in October can fail completely at 10°F. Have yours load-tested — most shops (including ours) will do it free. If your battery is more than 3–4 years old, consider replacing it proactively rather than waiting for a no-start on a freezing morning.
2. Check Your Antifreeze
Your coolant should be mixed at a 50/50 ratio of antifreeze and distilled water to protect down to at least -34°F. A quick tester strip can confirm your protection level. If your coolant hasn't been changed in 2+ years, a full flush is a good investment.
3. Inspect Your Tires
Winter in Chicago means ice, slush, and potholes that get worse every year. Check tread depth with the quarter test — if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, you need new tires. Consider all-season tires rated for snow (look for the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol) or a dedicated set of winter tires if you drive frequently in heavy snow.
Also check tire pressure — every 10°F drop in temperature causes tires to lose about 1 PSI.
4. Replace Wiper Blades
Standard wiper blades smear and skip in freezing temperatures. Switch to winter-rated wiper blades and top off your windshield washer fluid with a formula rated for below-zero temperatures. Do not use plain water — it will freeze in the lines.
5. Check All Belts and Hoses
Cold temperatures make rubber brittle. A cracked serpentine belt or hose that holds on through the fall can split on the first really cold day. Have them visually inspected and replaced if they show cracking or glazing.
6. Lubricate Door and Lock Seals
Door gaskets can freeze and tear in extreme cold. A light coat of silicone spray or WD-40 on door seals and lock cylinders prevents sticking and protects the rubber. Do this once in October and again in January.
7. Pack a Winter Emergency Kit
Even a well-maintained vehicle can get stranded. Keep these in your trunk:
- Jumper cables or a jump pack
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Small bag of kitty litter or sand (for traction)
- Warm blanket
- Flashlight
- Bottled water and a snack
